Fallowing is the practice of leaving a farm site empty (without fish) for a period, typically 2-4 months, between production cycles. The purpose is to break infection cycles and reduce parasite and disease pressure in the area. Coordinated fallowing, where all sites in an area are fallowed simultaneously, is the most effective measure. Authorities can mandate fallowing in the event of disease outbreaks.
