Cleaner Fish
Norwegian: Rensefisk
Cleaner fish is a collective term for fish used as biological delousing agents in salmon farming, primarily ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta) and lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus). The cleaner fish are placed in the net pens together with the salmon and eat sea lice directly off the salmon's skin. The use of cleaner fish has increased significantly as an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical delousing, but also raises its own animal welfare concerns.
