Smolt is the term for young salmon or trout that has undergone smoltification, a physiological adaptation process that enables the fish to live in seawater. During smoltification, the fish's gill physiology changes and it develops a silvery coloration. Smolt typically weighs 80-150 grams when transferred to sea-based net pens. The quality of the smolt is critical for the fish's subsequent growth and survival at sea.
