Atlantic Salmon
Norwegian: Laks
Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is the most important farmed species in Norway, accounting for over 90% of Norwegian aquaculture production. Salmon is an anadromous fish species that spawns in freshwater but spends most of its life in the sea. In farming, salmon goes through a life cycle from egg to smolt in freshwater before being transferred to sea-based net pens where it grows to harvest size of 4-6 kg over 12-18 months.
