Sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) is a parasitic copepod that lives on salmonid fish. Sea lice represent the single largest challenge for Norwegian salmon farming, costing the industry several billion NOK annually. The louse attaches to the fish's skin and feeds on mucus, skin and blood. High lice levels can cause severe damage and increased mortality. Authorities have set strict limits for permitted lice levels.
