Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is the second most important farmed species in Norway. The species originates from the west coast of North America but has been introduced to aquaculture worldwide. When raised in seawater it is often marketed as steelhead or sea trout. Rainbow trout has a somewhat shorter production cycle than salmon and is often more robust against certain diseases.
