Heart and Skeletal Muscle Inflammation (HSMI) is a viral disease of Atlantic salmon caused by piscine orthoreovirus (PRV-1). The disease causes inflammation of the cardiac muscle and red skeletal muscle. HSMI is very prevalent in Norwegian aquaculture, and PRV-1 is found in most farm sites. The disease causes variable mortality but can affect fish growth and slaughter quality. There is currently no effective vaccine.
