ISA (Infectious Salmon Anaemia)

Infectious Salmon Anaemia (ISA) is a serious viral disease affecting Atlantic salmon. The disease is caused by the ISA virus (an orthomyxovirus) and causes anaemia, haemorrhaging in organs and high mortality. ISA is a List 2 notifiable disease with strict control measures including culling of the entire site, establishment of control and surveillance zones, and fallowing. The disease has periodically caused major economic losses in Norwegian aquaculture.
