Amoebic Gill Disease (AGD) is caused by the amoeba Neoparamoeba perurans and is an increasing challenge in Norwegian salmon farming. The amoeba colonizes the gills causing inflammation, excessive mucus production and impaired respiration. AGD is typically treated with freshwater baths or hydrogen peroxide. The disease is most prevalent in autumn when sea temperatures are high and can cause significant mortality if not treated early.
