The floating collar is the buoyant ring that holds the net bag at the water surface and forms the frame of the net pen. Modern floating collars are typically made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and consist of two concentric pipes filled with air. The collar is designed to withstand heavy loads from waves, currents and wind, and is equipped with feeding pipes, walkways and mooring points. Standard sizes are 120, 140 or 160 metres in circumference.
